From Grassroots to the Olympics

Founded in 2001, with the goal of introducing cricket to the football-dominated country, Cricket Brasil started off with just over a few hundred players. Through its work on the ground, over the years, Cricket Brasil has managed to positively impact the lives of over 82,000 people through the sport, including professional and amateur cricketers, coaches, coaching staff, project leaders, community members and more.

Today, Cricket Brasil – also known as the official Brazilian Cricket Confederation – is the only national body recognised by the International Cricket Council (ICC), of which it has been a member since 2006. Its teams are set to participate in ICC World Cup and Olympic Games qualifiers.

“We are very privileged in Poços de Caldas to be known as the home of Cricket Brasil. It’s a very unique situation… in a country synonymous with football, we have more children in the town playing cricket than football!”

"Cricket gave me the opportunity to enrol in college, and to embrace values such as discipline and respect, which put me on a better path for which I’ll always be very grateful and is the reason I am where I am today."

Cricket as a Catalyst for Change

Cricket Brasil launched its Youth Development Programme in 2009, aiming to create positive change in underserved communities by providing access to sports facilities, equipment and coaching. More importantly, it sought to instil sportsmanship values, promote education and foster a sense of belonging, while also offering young Brazilians the chance to attend university through its scholarship scheme.

From just 24 children in 2009, there are now around 5,600 participants in Poços de Caldas alone. To meet the programme’s increasing popularity, local Physical Education teachers are also being trained to become cricket coaches. Through vital partnerships, such as the one with FP Markets, Cricket Brasil can continue the important work they do for communities across the country.

Supporting Education
Through the Cricket Brasil university programme, scholarships are given to young players enabling them to attend university. This is part of a larger initiative to attract more youth, encourage sportsmanship values, as well as provide educational opportunities.

Infrastructure Development
FP Markets’ sponsorship is contributing to the completion of the Cricket Brasil Indoor School and High Performance Centre in Poços de Caldas. These facilities will serve as inclusive spaces where social connections are created and maintained, and where future talent can thrive.

Community Engagement
Together, FP Markets and Cricket Brasil aspire to create a cricket ecosystem in which the sport and its social values empower players – of all levels and genders – to become agents of positive change who are able to go on to transform their own communities and lives.
