Why Trade Cryptocurrency CFDs?

A Contract for Difference (CFD) is an alternate way to trade Cryptocurrency. The ability to take a short position, coupled with leverage and the absence of a digital wallet, allow for easy access to the Cryptocurrency market. FP Markets clients in the United Kingdom can trade Cryptocurrency CFDs in all major cryptos including Bitcoin, Ripple (XRP), Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin and Ethereum.

Bitcoin (BTC)

Bitcoin was the first digital currency created in 2008

It accounts for 50% of the Cryptocurrency market cap

The highest that Bitcoin price has ever reached was in April 2021, when it hit the over US$63,000

The popularity of trading crypto has resulted in increased levels of liquidity

Litecoin (LTC)

Similar to Bitcoin, Litecoin differs in terms of scalability

It takes roughly 2.5 minutes to mine a block, compared to 10 minutes for Bitcoin

One of 1600+ altcoins, Litecoin is one of the most popular cryptocurrencies

Litecoin is a fork of Bitcoin in that it shares the same code

The block generation time has been decreased with more coins available

Ripple (XRP)

Ripple is the next generation real-time gross settlement system

It allows cross-border fund transactions within seconds, at very low costs

Many of the world's biggest banks including The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) in the UK use Ripple technology

Ethereum (ETH)

Ethereum, also known as 'Ether', is the second largest cryptocurrency after Bitcoin

It allows developers to create smart contracts on the platform

Involvement in multiple blockchain projects has seen Ethereum gain significant popularity

Bitcoin Cash (BCH)

Bitcoin Cash was created by the Bitcoin hard fork on August 1, 2017, and is an alternate version of the blockchain with different rules

Bitcoin Cash was created to counteract scalability issues experienced by Bitcoin

It works by switching from the main Bitcoin blockchain to a new version that has the capacity for a larger number of transactions

Fulfils the original promise of Bitcoin as “Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash”.

An Example of Leveraged
Cryptocurrency CFD Trading

Suppose you want to trade CFDs, where the underlying asset is the BTC/USD a Cryptocurrency, also known as BITCOIN. Let us suppose that the BTC/USD is trading at:

You decide to buy 1 digital coin of BTC/USD because you think that the BTC/USD price will rise in the future. Your margin rate is 50%. This means that you need to deposit 50% of the total position value into your margin account.

Now, in the next hour, if the price moves to 8300.50 /8307.60, you have a winning trade. You could close your position by selling at the current (Bid) price of USD 8300.50

In this case, the price moved in your favour. But, had the price declined instead, moving against your prediction, you could have made a loss. This continuous evaluation of price movements and resultant profit/loss happens daily. Accordingly, it leads to a net return (positive/negative) on your initial margin. In the loss scenario where your Free equity, (account balance+ Profit/Loss) falls below the margin requirements (4067.70), the broker will issue a margin call. If you fail to deposit the money, and the market moves further against you, when your free equity reach the 50% of your initial margin the contract will be closed at the current market price, known as “stop out.”
