On the 19th of August 2021, HSBC Holdings announced the banking group had initiated legal proceedings against the Republic of El Salvador for breaching the investment treaty with the United Kingdom. According to HSBC Holdings PLC, through the legal proceeding, it seeks to recover at least $49.3M (USD) in damages wrongly awarded against it by the Supreme Court of the Republic of El Salvador.
