Empowering Lasting Change
Transforming Communities Through Local Projects

Supporting Locally Led Solutions

As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts we have partnered with the Egmont Trust, an organisation dedicated to improving the lives of children, families and communities impacted by HIV and AIDS across sub-Saharan Africa. The Egmont Trust funds various local grassroot organisations and projects, which aim to achieve sustained improvements in nutrition, education, family income, as well as disease care and treatment.

What sets the Egmont Trust apart is its unwavering commitment to transparency: all operational costs are covered by its patrons and trustees, and 100% of every donation goes directly to local partners who work tirelessly to ensure every contribution creates meaningful, lasting change.

The Community Fight Against AIDS: Reach, Rescue & Rehabilitate

FP Markets is actively supporting the Egmont Trust’s Community Fight Against AIDS project based in Kisumu, Kenya. The project was founded in 2015 to support families, especially vulnerable girls, affected by violence and HIV/AIDS.

Given significant socio-economic challenges in Kisumu, one of Kenya’s poorest cities, many young girls have no choice but to engage in transactional relationships to survive or are forced into early marriages as their families cannot provide for their basic needs. As a result, the HIV infection rate currently stands at 13.9% – three times the national average.

Community Fight Against AIDS aims to reach, rescue and rehabilitate young at-risk girls through various initiatives, including counselling and support, the provision of safe spaces, access to healthcare and education, as well as encouraging reconciliation with family.

The Community Fight Against AIDS Project’s On-the-Ground Initiatives

Trained peer providers conduct night rescue missions to identify girls at risk, host them in safe hostels, and provide them access to healthcare and HIV testing. Friendship Benches - neutral spaces where girls can open up about commercial sex work, its impact on their lives and how they can protect themselves - have also been established.

Girls from local schools are supported financially to reduce drop out rates. In parallel, teachers, community health volunteers, religious leaders and administrators are given training to better equip them to be able to respond to child sexual violence cases.

A child neglect and abuse reporting system has been developed in coordination with the police and child protection organisations, and a toll-free hotline for children and adolescents experiencing abuse or seeking advice has been set up. Legal advice and support is also offered to girls who wish to prosecute perpetrators.

Girls and their caregivers receive support and counselling to reconcile. Caregivers are also given business training to be able to provide for their families. Child Rights Clubs have also been set up in schools to help children identify abusive behaviours and seek help.

“After we got a water pump, we observed a huge difference. Even though there is a drought in our region, with this machine, we don’t feel its effects. When people work together, the drought can’t destroy us.”

“Without this programme, I would have lost hope in life. But now I make dresses to support my child and my family. My mother’s business is also doing well and now we can eat three meals a day. My hope is to one day have my own dress shop.”

“After my father died, we were left with no means of survival. It forced me to leave school. We were living in a very bad house; the walls were falling apart. So, when KPEN introduced goat breeding to us…That’s how my mum was able to put up the house we were in, and we were able to go back to school.”
